Guba was founded in the 15th century. The city is located 168 km north-west of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on the north-eastern slopes of Shahdag mountain, at an altitude of 600 m above the sea level. Presumably, on the site of the modern city was the ancient city of the Caucasian Albania Trunk. Since 1735 the city was the capital of the Guba khanate, and during the Russian-Persian war of 1796 the city was temporarily occupied by the Russian army. At present, Guba is one of the largest cities of Azerbaijan. It witnessed many important historical events. In Guba there is a mass burial of people, killed during the March events of 1918. Guba is a very interesting city in terms of architecture. Here you can see old buildings that have been carefully preserved to the present day.
Guba is a well-known centre of carpet weaving. In Guba there is a branch of the Azerbaijan University of Arts. There is a local history museum. One of the most beautiful cities in the country, Guba is especially good in spring when its numerous gardens and parks blossom.
