Gabala, one of the oldest cities in Azerbaijan, known since the first century of our era. The city is located in the lower part of the Bazar-Yurt mountain gorge and Tufan mountain, in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus, on the right bank of the Damiraparanchai River. At one time it was the centre of the Caucasian Albania, and subsequently part of in the state of the Shirvanshahs and the Sheki khanate. The city has preserved many outstanding monuments of antiquity and medieval architecture. The defensive tower of the 9th-11th centuries, the Imam-Baba Mausoleum of the 18th and 19th centuries, the 18th-century Juma Mosque, the Local History Museum, the National Theater and the Gabala Archaeological Center all evoke great interest among the city's guests.

Since 2009, every summer a musical festival is held in Gabala. Performances of musicians are held under the open sky.
